By Tony Jimenez TROON, Scotland (Reuters) - Colin Montgomerie, boosted by one of the best strokes of his 29-year career, had the home crowd eating out of the palm of his hand as he posted a level-par 71 in the British Open first round on Thursday. The 53-year-old Scot, who is a member at Royal Troon and was given the honor of hitting the first shot of the championship at 0635 local time, briefly led the field after reeling off five birdies in seven holes on the front nine. The inward half, however, proved a much more difficult test in fresh winds and three bogeys on that stretch halted Montgomerie's progress.

By Tony Jimenez TROON, Scotland (Reuters) - Ladies European Tour (LET) chief executive Ivan Khodabakhsh has dismissed the idea that golf will be excluded from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after a British bookmaker offered odds of 10-1 on the prospect. A host of big-name male withdrawals from next month's Games in Rio de Janeiro including the top four in the world, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, has caused a media frenzy at this week's British Open. Ladbrokes reacted to the furor by opening a book on the possibility of golf, which is returning to the Olympics in August for the first time since 1904, being excluded in Japan.

World number one Lydia Ko says she's too excited about playing golf at the Olympic Games to worry about the Zika virus -- and most other women on tour feel the same. The top men's golfers have pulled out of the Games in Rio de Janeiro, many citing Zika health concerns, prompting questions about the sport's return to the Olympics after 112 years. "I'm more excited about the Olympics, about the ceremony, about just being part of the Olympic vibe than worrying about the Zika virus," she told AFP.

Could cheerleading be the most progressive sport in terms of gender roles? New research from the University of East Anglia indicates that the traditionally female-centered activity can help participants of both sexes challenge stereotypes about girls in sports. The study, which was published in the journal Sport in Society: Cultures, Commerce, Media, Politics, tracked the growing popularity of cheerleading in the U.K. and focused on the members of four cheerleading teams. "The participants in our study talked about flipping gender norms in cheerleading," Dr. Amy Pressland, a co-author of the study, tells Yahoo Parenting.

A spleen can become enlarged for many reasons, including genetic diseases, William Katkov, MD, a gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Health. Here's why that's a problem: A person may feel better and resume their normal activities, but their enlarged spleen is more susceptible to rupturing and may no longer be protected by their ribcage, leaving it incredibly vulnerable to injury. "An enlarged spleen is at an increased risk for rupture or injury in the setting of normal trauma, like a football game, diving into a pool, or minor car accident," Katkov says. While an enlarged spleen can be asymptomatic, Katkov says a person can feel uncomfortable or have a feeling of fullness in their upper abdomen on the left side.
