Researchers at the University of Washington are using GoPro cameras to train AI neural networks to behave and plan like dogs. By strapping a GoPro camera to an Alaskan Malamute's head, the team recorded 380 dog's-eye-view video clips which were then shown to the neural net to teach it how dogs are likely to behave in a given situation. The team calls this DECADE, or the Dataset of Ego-Centric Actions in a Dog Environment.

Humanity might not go out with a bang, but a sniffle - at least if the terrifyingly-plausible "superbug" scenario comes to pass. As bacteria increasingly evolve resistance to antibiotics, we could be cast back into "the dark ages of medicine" in the next few decades. But now we might have a new way to fight back. Researchers at Oxford University have discovered a "genetic catalyst" that lets the bugs develop resistance - and they might be able to switch it off.

To squeeze the most energy we possibly can out of the Sun, we need to improve the efficiency of solar cells. Currently, most technologies only capture the visible light, leaving the rest of the spectrum to go to waste. Now, researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have developed a way to use nanoparticles coated in special organic dyes to convert near-infrared light into visible light, which could allow solar cells to harvest more of the spectrum.

When we think of the structure of DNA, the image that most likely comes to mind is that of the iconic double helix. This shape was identified in 1953 as DNA's most common form, and while other structures have been spotted in lab samples it wasn't certain whether these existed naturally or not. Now, Australian scientists have found one of these unusual forms, a twisted knot known as the i-motif, in living cells for the first time.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a devastating degenerative disease with no known cure. A big mystery surrounding the disease is why it seems to affect women more than men, but new research from Northwestern Medicine may have finally discovered the reason. A guardian molecule has been found to protect against the disease, and it turns out it's triggered by testosterone.

A pledge made last year to forge millions of acres of new national parklands for Chilean Patagonia has come to fruition, with President Michelle Bachelet today formalizing the handover of what is described as the largest private land donation in history. It marks an important milestone for Kristine Tompkins, who together with her late husband Douglas Tompkins, has devoted decades to preserving the natural beauty of Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia.

Everybody wants to live longer, but really, what's the point of reaching your 120th birthday if your last 50 years will be spent in pain and too infirm to do much? Rather than focusing purely on a longer lifespan, it's a better use of scientists' time to improve our "healthspan" - the amount of time we can enjoy good health. A new study from Brown University has linked the protein Sirt4 with an extended healthy lifespan in fruit flies, and the find may carry across to humans.

New research from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has found strong evidence that disruptions in sleep cycles could be an early, preclinical sign of Alzheimer's disease. A further companion study in mice found that circadian rhythm disruptions could directly accelerate the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain - the build-up of which are strongly linked to Alzheimer's disease and memory loss.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland has confirmed that the satellite discovered on January 20 by an amateur astronomer is very likely the lost Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) space weather satellite. The space agency says that it will attempt to capture data from the orbiter and restart its instruments.

Sometimes being cool doesn't mean being the edgiest or fastest on the lot. Sometimes, being cool is all about getting the job done without a lot of pomp. That's the kind of cool found in the 2018 Outlander. It sells at a lower price than most in the three-row segment. But it ain't cheap.

Imagine if you could recolor your smartphone case or other accessories, to match what you were wearing on any given day. Well, it may eventually be possible, thanks to research being conducted at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Scientists there have created a new system that allows the color of 3D-printed objects to be changed repeatedly, after they've been created.

University of Texas student Sean Riley needed a violin to play a particular piece of music, but not one with the customary four strings. The piece called for an instrument with six strings. But instead of heading to the local music store or shopping online, he opted to design and 3D-print a custom violin of his very own.

Though many may think of large format behemoths at the mention of synthesizers, analog and digital sound laboratories come in many shapes and sizes - ranging from colorful accordion-like wearable models to ring-shaped multi-taskers to desktop blocks. Most of these devices are aimed squarely at adults, but occasionally hardware for young sonic scientists comes along that's capable of satisfying grown ups, too. Such is the case with Blipblox, a music-making toy for kids which looks like so much fun that parents might just end up playing it themselves.

Overprescription and use of antibiotics is leading us down a terrifying path, towards a world where our best drugs simply don't work and even the most basic of medical procedures becomes deadly again. To prevent this future, Australian scientists have looked to the past, digging up a long forgotten antibiotic candidate and finding that it's effective against some of the most dangerous "superbugs."
